Helldivers 2 Creative Director Dreams of Epic Crossovers, But Prioritizes Game's Identity
Johan Pilestedt, creative director of Helldivers 2, recently revealed his wish list for potential game crossovers, sparking excitement among fans. His musings, initially triggered by a playful exchange with the Trench Crusade tabletop game team, expanded to include iconic franchises like Starship Troopers, Terminator, Warhammer 40,000, Alien, Predator, Star Wars, and even Blade Runner.
While acknowledging the appeal of such collaborations, Pilestedt emphasized the potential pitfalls. He cautioned that incorporating too many crossovers could dilute Helldivers 2's unique satirical, militaristic tone, ultimately compromising the game's identity. He clarified that these were simply "fun musings," not concrete plans.
The possibility of smaller crossover elements, such as individual weapons or character skins acquired via Warbonds, remains open. However, Pilestedt stressed that any such additions would be carefully considered to maintain the game's cohesive universe and avoid clashing with its established aesthetic. This approach contrasts with the trend of some live-service games overloading on crossover content, sometimes at the expense of the core game experience.
The future of crossovers in Helldivers 2 remains uncertain. While the prospect of Super Earth soldiers battling Xenomorphs alongside Jango Fett or the Terminator is undeniably intriguing, the final decision rests with Arrowhead Studios, who are prioritizing the preservation of the game's distinct identity.
