GTA 6 Mapping Project Surges with Trailer 2: 'Information Overload'

Author: Finn May 24,2025

The long-running GTA 6 mapping project has surged into high gear following the release of Trailer 2, with one of its key members, Garza, telling IGN, "it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year." The GTA 6 Mapping Discord community, which now boasts nearly 400 members, is abuzz with excitement as they dive into the wealth of new details provided by the trailer.

"It's an information overload - it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year," Garza, who manages the Discord server, shared with IGN. "We have so much new content to work on and we're really just getting started."

The GTA 6 Mapping Discord was born in the wake of the massive September 2022 leaks, which some fans believe were cheekily nodded to by Rockstar at the beginning of Trailer 2. The project's mission has been to construct the most accurate map of GTA 6, relying until now on those leaks and the first trailer from December 2023. However, the latest map version, released by project lead DuPz0r at the end of March, has quickly become outdated thanks to the flood of new information from Trailer 2.

Alongside confirming plot details and characters, and releasing 70 new screenshots, Rockstar provided a glimpse into the explorable areas of Leonida, GTA 6's version of Florida. Confirmed locations include Vice City (GTA 6's take on Miami), the tropical archipelago of Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and the national landmark Mount Kalaga, located near the state's northern border.

The dedicated volunteers are meticulously analyzing the trailer to pinpoint the exact locations of all visible elements, striving to align images of fictional spaces with their real-world counterparts. This effort will help finalize more sections of the GTA 6 map. Once completed, DuPz0r plans to release an updated map, which fans eagerly anticipate as the best preview of what to expect from GTA 6 upon its release in May 2026.

Should Rockstar release additional assets or gameplay footage before then, the volunteers are ready to dive back in. Only upon GTA 6's release will they be able to compare their fan-made map with the actual game and gauge the accuracy of their hard work.

However, a shadow looms over the project with the possibility of intervention by Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two. In March, a modder who created a playable version of the GTA 6 map within GTA 5 was forced to halt their project after receiving a takedown notice from Take-Two. That mod was based on the GTA 6 mapping project.

Last year, when asked about potential action from Take-Two, Garza expressed "some mild concern." He added, "This project has been going on for quite some time with no direct disruption to our community. However, I always keep it into consideration if they intend on communicating with us in the future for any reason. We do not explicitly showcase leaked material in the map, so I do not believe they would take that down in particular. I believe they are aware that this project gathers popularity and interest in the game, since everyone wants to see how the world may look like. This can be one of the reasons why they haven’t done anything, since it’s not too negative. If I were ever in the situation of receiving a cease and desist though, then I would respectfully cease and desist. As we get closer to a precise map, it may be possible to receive that notice in the future."
