Fortnite's Item Shop Under Fire for "Greedy" Reskin Releases
Fortnite players are expressing significant dissatisfaction with the recent influx of what they perceive as reskinned cosmetics in the game's item shop. Online forums are buzzing with accusations of Epic Games prioritizing profit over player satisfaction. The core complaint centers on the re-release of skins previously offered for free or bundled with PlayStation Plus subscriptions, fueling accusations of greed. This criticism arises as Fortnite continues its aggressive expansion into the lucrative realm of digital cosmetic items, a trend expected to persist throughout 2025.
The evolution of Fortnite since its 2017 launch is dramatic, with the most notable change being the sheer volume of available skins and customization options. While new cosmetics have always been a key component of the game, the current volume has drawn considerable backlash. The addition of new game modes further solidifies Epic Games' vision of Fortnite as a multifaceted platform rather than a standalone title. This expansion, however, inevitably leads to criticism, particularly regarding the current selection of skins.
A recent Reddit post by user chark_uwu ignited a widespread discussion, highlighting the item shop's latest offerings – skins deemed by many players to be mere reskins of existing, popular designs. One player commented, "This is starting to get concerning. Five edit styles sold separately in just a week? Last year, these would have been free, part of PS+ packs, or simply added to the original skins." The post included images comparing the new paid skins to previously free offerings from 2018 to 2024. Edit styles, traditionally free or unlockable, are now being sold individually, further fueling the accusations of exploitative practices.
The outcry extends beyond individual skins. Players are decrying the release of what they consider to be simple color variations as entirely new, paid items. "All these reskins of simple random skins that are nothing more than color changes being released as new skins is ridiculous," stated another player. This discontent is amplified by Epic Games' ongoing introduction of new cosmetic categories, such as the recently launched "Kicks" footwear, which further expands the opportunities for monetization.
Currently in Chapter 6 Season 1, Fortnite features a Japanese-themed update with new weapons and locations. Looking ahead to 2025, leaked information suggests an upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong update, with a Godzilla skin already present in the current season. This indicates Epic Games' willingness to incorporate high-profile franchises, but does little to alleviate player concerns regarding the perceived greed surrounding existing cosmetic offerings.
