As a practical individual when it comes to spending money, I typically stick to purchasing essentials and the occasional video game on sale. However, last year marked a departure from my usual habits when I decided to indulge in a LEGO set, something I hadn't considered since my childhood days of building with these iconic blocks. Despite my love for LEGO as a kid, adulthood seemed to shift my focus away from such hobbies.
One major factor that kept me away from LEGO for so long is their cost. While there are affordable sets under $25, those tied to popular movie or video game franchises often come with a heftier price tag. It took a significant discount to convince me to purchase the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant, which had been on sale since October of last year for under $50. I finally decided that my desk could use a quirky new potted plant.

My interest in this set was sparked after reading IGN's review of the Piranha Plant build. Being a longtime fan of Mario games, this set seemed the perfect way to showcase my passion for the franchise. Although LEGO offers various floral sets in its botanical line that would also enhance my desk, none capture the whimsical yet eerie charm of the Piranha Plant.
My LEGO Piranha Plant
Having now completed the set, I'm delighted to have it on my desk. It brings a smile to my face, imagining myself in the Mushroom Kingdom, tending to my little potted Piranha Plant during work hours. The joy of the finished product is matched by the satisfaction of building it. I managed to assemble it in one afternoon, yet it was engaging enough to keep me focused throughout. Currently, it's my only LEGO Nintendo set, but my positive experience has me contemplating adding more to my collection.

How Much Are You Willing to Spend on a LEGO Set You Love?
The LEGO market can be pricey, with new adult-targeted sets often priced over $200. It's tempting to splurge on something spectacular, but it's important to balance indulgence with financial responsibility. For me, the fact that the Mario LEGO set was available for under $50 justified the purchase. The hours spent building it and the daily joy it brings me easily validate the cost. While that joy is priceless, $50 is the limit I'm comfortable spending on such a luxury.
