TouchArcade Game of the Week: ‘Ocean Keeper’

TouchArcade Rating: A winning blend of distinct gameplay styles is always a treat, and Ocean Keeper from RetroStyle Games delivers just that. Think Blaster Master's blend of side-scrolling and top-down action, or the unique combination of roguelike diving and restaurant management in Dave the Diver. Ocean Keeper masterfully intertwines side-view mining with top-down mech combat, creating a compelling and replayable experience.

The core loop is simple: you crash-land your mech on an alien underwater planet and must delve into subterranean caves to gather resources. Time is of the essence, though, as waves of enemies relentlessly attack your surface base. The mining segments, presented in a side-scrolling perspective, involve excavating rocks to uncover resources and artifacts, earning you valuable in-game currency. Once the mining window closes, the action shifts to a top-down twin-stick shooter, where you pilot your mech, defending against increasingly challenging waves of bizarre aquatic creatures. Light tower defense elements add a strategic layer to the combat.

Resources fuel upgrades for both your mining equipment and your mech, with extensive branching skill trees offering diverse customization options. The roguelike nature means death ends a run, resetting your temporary upgrades. However, persistent upgrades unlockable between runs ensure steady progress, even after setbacks. Procedurally generated overworld and cave layouts guarantee fresh challenges with each playthrough.

While Ocean Keeper starts slowly, and early runs might feel challenging, perseverance is key. As you unlock upgrades and master the game's mechanics, the experience transforms. The synergistic interplay between weapons and upgrades forms the game's core, encouraging experimentation with different builds and strategies. Initially uncertain, I found myself completely captivated once the game's momentum built. The satisfying loop and constant sense of progression make it incredibly hard to put down.
