Preparation for Children Going to the Hospital
"HC And - When Mother or Father Has Cancer" has been developed through a collaborative effort between the Oncology Department R, H.C. Andersen Children and Youth Hospital, Odense University Hospital, hospitalized children, their families, and 10:30 Visual Communication.
HC And is a specialized patient information resource designed for children aged 4-7 years. Its primary goal is to prepare these young patients and reduce their anxiety by introducing them to hospital terminology and processes that may be unfamiliar to them.
"HC And - When Mother or Father Has Cancer" serves as an introductory guide to the general cancer patient journey at the hospital, tailored specifically for the youngest children, their families, and friends. The information is delivered through a child's voice and accompanied by animations in the "Learning through play with tablet/mobile phone/touch screen" genre.
Children in this age group learn best through play and concrete, tangible information. As relatives of cancer patients, they can quickly become overwhelmed with information. Therefore, HC And is structured into short, manageable sequences that are presented at a child-friendly level, allowing "newbies" to easily start their learning journey.
The content comprises 7 staged stories that address key questions about cancer, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Hospital staff can utilize this material as an educational tool to foster a shared understanding with the child.
HC And is available for free download to everyone.
