Image by Destructoid I'm aware that my Dead Rails class tier list might stir some debate, but it's necessary. The Vampire remains a top choice, even after recent updates, but the Survivalist has surged in popularity lately. It's disheartening to see the Zombie class still underperforming and unable to use Snake Oil. Yet, teamwork plays a role, and I've factored that in, albeit minimally. Remember, the goal is to enjoy the game with friends, not just to min-max your stats.
S Tier Dead Rails Classes
Screenshot by Destructoid It's no surprise that the top tier is dominated by high damage output. The Survivalist and Vampire stand out, though the Ironclad is a strong contender. However, only two truly deserve the top spot:
**Name** | **Cost** | **Info** |
Survivalist | 75 | The Survivalist starts with a Tomahawk and becomes more formidable as your health decreases. Even at full health, you deal more damage than others, though a nerf might be looming. This class excels against tough enemies that don't go down easily, offering a punch that other classes can't match. |
Vampire | 75 | The Vampire is all about speed and aggression. Faster than a horse or sprinting zombie, your melee attacks are devastating, often downing zombies in just three hits. Sunlight is your enemy, so stick to the shadows. Fortunately, you start with a Vampire Knife that heals on each hit, making survival about maintaining offensive pressure. |
A Tier Dead Rails Classes
Screenshot by Destructoid Here, we delve into classes that are still excellent but less focused on pure survival. They offer good damage and starting gear, yet they're not as effective for solo play. The Ironclad stands out for its potential.
**Name** | **Cost** | **Info** |
Ironclad | 100 | The Ironclad is ready for battle, sporting full armor that makes you much harder to kill. The downside is a slight 10% speed reduction, making it less ideal for solo runs. Team play is where the Ironclad shines, especially with shotguns for close-quarters combat. |
Cowboy | 50 | The Cowboy starts strong with a revolver, ammo, and a horse, easing early-game fights and providing speed for survival during chaotic Blood Moon nights. With the Game Pass, you can sell the revolver for extra cash to start with a better loadout. It's a cost-effective choice. |
Priest | 75 | The Priest brings divine weapons to the fight, including Crucifixes and Holy Water, effective against enemies and immune to lightning. Not suited for solo play, the Priest excels in larger teams, offering support through powerful throwables. |
Arsonist | 20 | The Arsonist thrives in chaos, equipped with Molotovs and enhanced fire damage for quick enemy group takedowns. Ideal for smaller areas and hit-and-run tactics, especially with a horse for mobility. |
B Tier Dead Rails Classes
Screenshot by Destructoid These classes are specialists, excelling in specific scenarios. The Doctor offers great support at a low cost, though not ideal for direct combat. They, along with the others, are invaluable in group settings.
**Name** | **Cost** | **Info** |
The Alamo | 50 | The Alamo is designed for defense, starting with Sheet Metal, Barbed Wire, and a helmet to fortify the Train. Essential for holding the line and slowing down enemy waves, this class is highly effective under pressure. |
Doctor | 15 | The Doctor is your lifeline in dire situations, equipped with healing supplies and the ability to revive teammates at half their health. One of the cheapest classes, yet invaluable in group play. Selling bandages and snake oil can provide a $40 boost. |
Miner | 15 | The Miner is perfect for resource gathering and nighttime exploration, with a helmet for visibility and a Pickaxe for quick ore mining. They come with Coal to get started. While not combat-focused, their utility is unmatched. |
C Tier Dead Rails Classes
Screenshot by Destructoid These classes offer good utility but are less effective for solo play. The Conductor is nearly essential for larger teams, while the Horse class, though a novelty, adds a fun twist.
**Name** | **Cost** | **Info** |
Conductor | 50 | The Conductor drives the Train, starting with Coal to reach speeds of 84. Vulnerable without a melee weapon at spawn, they're crucial for quick escapes. No longer penalized with health loss, they're more resilient. |
Horse | Unlockable through the Horsing Around gamemode | The Horse Class transforms you into a horse, unlocked via the 2025 April Fools event. With standard horse stats and a large hitbox, navigating tight spaces can be tricky. You can ride players but not the train or other horses. |
High Roller | 50 | The High Roller earns 1.5x money from bags, perfect for early gear upgrades. However, you're more likely to get struck by lightning during storms, embodying high risk for high reward. |
D Tier Dead Rails Classes
Screenshot by Destructoid Every tier has its bottom, and here we find the least effective classes. The default class is simple but lacks perks, while the Zombie class is notably underwhelming.
**Name** | **Cost** | **Info** |
None | Free | The None class is the default, offering just a shovel and whatever you can scavenge. No perks or drawbacks, it's ideal for beginners to learn the game and save up bonds before choosing a class. |
Zombie | 75 | The Zombie thrives in chaos, healing by feeding on corpses and slipping past enemies. Lacking access to Bandages or Snake Oil, it relies on stealth and sustainability. However, it remains a challenging choice at present. |
