Insomniac Games Eyes More Game-to-Screen Adaptations Following CEO's Retirement

Insomniac Games, renowned for its Ratchet & Clank franchise, has expressed keen interest in further adapting its games for film and television. This revelation comes from co-Studio Head Ryan Schneider in a recent Variety interview, following the announcement of founder and CEO Ted Price's retirement after 30 years.

"Reflecting on the 2016 Ratchet & Clank movie, we gained valuable experience," Schneider stated. "We're definitely interested in pursuing more adaptations, especially with Ratchet & Clank, which holds a special place in our hearts."

The 2016 film received mixed critical reception. However, with Sony's acquisition of Insomniac in 2019 and Sony's proven success in game adaptations (notably, the acclaimed The Last of Us series), Insomniac is optimistic about its future in this arena.

Sony's Expanding Game Adaptation Portfolio

Insomniac's ambition aligns perfectly with Sony's established track record in game-to-screen adaptations. Recent successes include the 2022 Uncharted film and the 2023 The Last of Us series.

Further bolstering this strategy, Sony's CES 2025 press conference unveiled several upcoming projects: The Last of Us Season 2 (HBO, April 2025), an Until Dawn live-action film (April 2025), Ghost of Tsushima Legends anime series (Crunchyroll, 2027), and feature films based on Helldivers and Horizon Zero Dawn, though release dates for the latter two remain unannounced.

Insomniac's Leadership Transition

Ted Price's retirement marks the end of an era for Insomniac Games, the studio behind iconic franchises like Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and Marvel's Spider-Man. Price explained his decision, made last year, as a natural progression after three decades at the helm.

The reins are now held by three long-time Insomniac veterans: Ryan Schneider, Chad Dezern, and Jen Huang, who will serve as co-Studio Heads. Price expressed confidence in their abilities, emphasizing their deep understanding of Insomniac's culture and processes.
