PC gaming is largely synonymous with keyboard and mouse controls, particularly for genres like first-person shooters and strategy games that benefit from the enhanced precision. However, some PC games are surprisingly better with controllers. Reflex-based movement and fast-paced melee combat often lend themselves well to gamepad control. Similarly, genres originating on consoles and later ported to PC often feel more natural with a controller.
While many PC releases offer keyboard and mouse support, several titles are highlighted below as being superior with a gamepad. Note that the recent releases of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Infinity Nikki, Marvel Rivals, Path of Exile 2, and Delta Force, while excellent games, are arguably better played with a keyboard and mouse. Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered, however, might offer a slightly improved experience with a gamepad, though the difference is minimal.
Several upcoming PC game releases show promise for controller-based play:
- Freedom Wars Remastered: A PS Vita revival echoing the Monster Hunter formula, suggesting controller compatibility.
- Tales of Graces f Remastered: The Tales series consistently benefits from gamepad use, and this remaster is expected to follow suit.
- Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Given the predecessor's superior controller experience on PC, Rebirth's similar combat system points towards a similar preference.
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: A PS5 port to PC usually implies controller prioritization, although keyboard and mouse will likely function adequately.
A 2024 Soulslike title has also been added:
