In an insightful Xbox Wire interview, Fumihiko Yasuda, the Head of Team NINJA at Koei Tecmo, explained the vision behind NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black. Yasuda highlighted that NINJA GAIDEN 2 was chosen as the base due to its strong foundation as an action game within the series. The addition of "Black" to the title signifies its status as the definitive edition, echoing the success of NINJA GAIDEN Black for the original game.

Yasuda disclosed that the inspiration for NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black stemmed from fan feedback during the 2021 release of NINJA GAIDEN Master Collection. Fans expressed a desire for an experience akin to the original NINJA GAIDEN 2. He emphasized that NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black was crafted to address the concerns of core fans eager to know Ryu Hayabusa's future, especially with NINJA GAIDEN 4 introducing a new protagonist. NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black represents the fifth iteration within the NINJA GAIDEN 2 series. Initially released in 2008, NINJA GAIDEN 2 was exclusive to the Xbox 360 and marked the first Team Ninja title not published by Tecmo. The following year, Koei Tecmo released NINJA GAIDEN Sigma 2 for the PS3, a version tailored to meet Germany's stricter content guidelines after the original was banned for its gore.

Four years later, NINJA GAIDEN Sigma 2 Plus hit the PS Vita in 2013, reintroducing the gore from the original game and adding new features like Hero mode, Ninja race, and Turbo. Finally, the NINJA GAIDEN Master Collection was released in 2021 across PS4, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, featuring NINJA GAIDEN Sigma, NINJA GAIDEN Sigma 2, and NINJA GAIDEN 3: Razor’s Edge.
