The Mario Kart World Direct held on April 17 provided an exciting glimpse into the next installment of the iconic Mario Kart series. Here's a comprehensive look at the game's innovative free-roam world and its features.
Mario Kart World Direct Reveals
An Interconnected World
Nintendo's Mario Kart World Direct showcased a groundbreaking feature: an interconnected world where players can explore and navigate through various regions, both familiar and new to the series. "In Mario Kart World, the game’s courses are interspersed across the world with roads leading from one to the next – so players can experience navigating roads in between courses!" explained Nintendo.
This new world lets players discover Mario's universe in a fresh way, featuring scenic views, iconic landmarks, and hidden items and missions. These elements enhance driving skills beyond traditional races. The game includes a mix of new and classic courses, such as Mario Bros. Circuit, Crown City, Salty Salty Speedway, Starview Peak, Boo Cinema, Toad's Factory, Peach Beach, and Wario Shipyard, all reimagined to fit seamlessly into this expansive Mario Kart experience.
Grand Prix and Knockout Tour
Mario Kart World introduces two main racing formats: Grand Prix and Knockout Tour, both supporting up to 24 racers—the largest number in the series' history. Players will encounter various obstacles, including cars shooting Bullet Bills and attacks from Hammer Bros.
In the Grand Prix, racers compete in four consecutive races to win cups like the Mushroom Cup, Flower Cup, and Star Cup. A unique twist is that players must travel to the next race location to continue. Completing all cups unlocks a speculated "colorful course," believed to be Rainbow Road.
The Knockout Tour is a new race format that spans from one end of the world to another. It functions as a survival mode where racers must finish in a qualifying position to advance to the next race, or face elimination.
Items, Characters, and More
The game introduces new items alongside classics. Notable additions include the Coin Shell, which knocks opponents aside and leaves a coin trail; the Ice Flower, which freezes touched racers; and the Big Mushroom, which temporarily enlarges players to crush opponents.
The roster features classic Mushroom Kingdom characters like Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser, joined by newcomers such as Goomba, Spike, and even a Cow. Hidden throughout the world are alternate costumes for these characters, adding variety and personalization.
Playing With Friends
Mario Kart World offers diverse game modes for social play. Time Trials allow for online ghost data battles, while VS mode provides extensive customization options for team races. Battle mode returns with Coin Runners, focusing on coin collection, and Balloon Battle, where the last player with an intact balloon wins.
The game supports both local and online play, with up to four players in split-screen mode on a single system. Local wireless play supports up to eight players (two per Switch 2 device). The new GameChat feature on the Switch 2 enhances communication and screen sharing during races.
Additional features include Smart Steering to help players stay on track, Auto-accelerate for easier driving, Tilt controls for a more immersive experience, and the new Joy-Con 2 Wheel for enhanced racing control.
Mario Kart World redefines the kart-racing genre with its open-world exploration, set to launch exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. Stay tuned for more updates on this thrilling new title.
