Get ready, Guardians! Bungie has just unveiled an exciting lineup for Destiny 2 under the banner of the "Year of Prophecy." This year promises four major content releases, including two new expansions and significant updates that cater to both paying and free players.
The Year of Prophecy kicks off with "Rite of the Nine," a free update available to all players, offering a fresh take on dungeon diving. This update revamps familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep, introducing unique twists and opportunities to reconnect with Orin while exploring refreshed dungeon weapons.
On July 15, the first paid expansion, "Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate," will launch, marking the beginning of a multiyear saga. This expansion reintroduces the enigmatic Nine and features new characters Lodi and Ikora stepping into the spotlight. Set on the new destination Kepler, players can expect puzzle-solving and pathfinding challenges, new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.
Simultaneously, on July 15, Bungie will roll out major core game innovations, including revised armor and gear systems for enhanced buildcrafting and a new activity selection screen called the Portal. This update introduces various activity types like Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the new Solo Ops, catering to different player preferences and offering 50 new modifiers for deeper gameplay customization.

Following "The Edge of Fate," the "Ash & Iron" update will launch on September 9, with the second expansion, "Renegades," set to release on December 2. The year will conclude with the "Shadow & Order" update on March 3.
"Destiny 2: Renegades" draws inspiration from the legendary Star Wars universe, blending Destiny's unique storytelling and gameplay with iconic sci-fi elements.
These updates come at a crucial time for Bungie, following significant layoffs in July 2024, which affected 220 staff members, or 17% of its workforce, less than a year after another round of 100 layoffs.
While Destiny 2 continues to evolve, Bungie is also working on the reboot of their classic franchise, Marathon. Revealed in May 2023, the first hands-on preview of Marathon was shared recently, with IGN reporting a promising alpha state that could satisfy the long-standing demand for a new Bungie PvP experience. Marathon is set to launch on PC and consoles in September.
