Beast of Reincarnation, Pokémon Devs' New RPG, Launches Summer 2026

Game Freak, the studio behind Pokémon, is set to launch its latest original IP, Beast of Reincarnation, this summer. Discover the key announcements from Xbox Developer Direct 2026 and insights from game director Furushima.

Beast of Reincarnation: “One-Person, One-Dog Action RPG”

Isolation Meets Flora and Fauna in Post-Apocalyptic Japan

First revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase in July 2025, Beast of Reincarnation follows a journey with Emma, a shunned human girl, and her companion Koo through Japan in 4026 AD. The world is overrun with "blight"-infected, overgrown forests and corrupted beasts known as "Malefacts." Both Emma and Koo carry the "blight" within them, granting them unique abilities to fight bosses called "Nushi" and absorb their power. Ultimately, they confront the Beast of Reincarnation itself.

As revealed, this "one-person, one-dog action RPG" introduces a unique turn-based combat system by combining Emma's fast-paced gameplay with Koo's command support. This allows players to strategize during brief windows. Emma wields a katana for close-range combat and uses weapons like bows and crossbows for long-range attacks. Meanwhile, Koo employs plant-based attacks known as "bloom arts."

Furthermore, game director Kota Furushima noted that the game encourages players to personalize their playstyles. Players can choose from three difficulty settings: Story, Normal, and Hard Modes. Equipable items, Spirit Stones, provide various effects based on the player's fighting style. Additionally, each of Emma's katanas and Koo's Charming items are hinted to offer "specialized bonuses."

Director Furushima Says They’re Focusing on Game Experience

In a recent interview with IGN, Furushima addressed concerns about whether GAME FREAK could deliver the visuals and performance seen in the trailers, given past criticisms of their 3D open-world titles. He clarified that his team approached the RPG as a "very specific game experience," rather than viewing it as "a title of a certain level of quality."

"Part of that, of course, is making sure that it performs really well," he explained, "but our attention is more on getting the experience over to you and making sure that our vision can get to your hands and your hearts."

To convey the intended emotional impact, he added that the music score incorporates "the loneliness and despair of the world" being destroyed, along with the warmth of Emma's friendship with Koo, despite treating other Malefacts like him as enemies. Moreover, Furushima confirmed that players can pet the dog.

Furushima first pitched Beast of Reincarnation to Gear Project, GAME FREAK's internal contest for original IP outside of Pokémon, six years ago. The game was initially dubbed Project Bloom for publishing under Take-Two Interactive's Private Division, until Fictions acquired the indie label in 2024.

"It is very important to GAME FREAK to keep taking on the challenge of creating original games," Masafumi Saito, general manager of GAME FREAK's Development Department 1, stated in a 2023 interview with VGC.

Other non-Pokémon games produced through GAME FREAK's Gear Project include the metroidvania and physics-based puzzle game Giga Wrecker, the 2D side-scroller Tembo the Badass Elephant, and the rhythm game HarmoKnight. Like Beast of Reincarnation—and unlike Pokémon—these titles are not exclusive to Nintendo.
