Larian Studios, creators of the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur's Gate 3, have revealed intriguing details about abandoned projects. CEO Swen Vincke shared that a Baldur's Gate 3 sequel, and even DLC, were in development, reaching a playable state before being shelved.
While acknowledging the potential appeal of this "playable" content, Vincke cited team fatigue after years of D&D-related development as the primary reason for cancellation. The prospect of another multi-year commitment to the same IP proved unappealing. The studio prioritized pursuing original concepts instead.
This decision, according to Vincke, significantly boosted team morale. The studio is now focusing on two unannounced projects, described as their most ambitious yet. Senior product manager Tom Butler confirmed a studio-wide break following the release of Baldur's Gate 3's final major patch (expected Fall 2024), which will include mod support, cross-play, and new endings.
Larian's history with the Divinity series suggests a potential return to that franchise. While a Divinity: Original Sin 3 has been hinted at, Vincke confirmed their next Divinity project will be unexpected.
The future remains bright for Larian Studios, as they embark on new creative endeavors following the immense success of Baldur's Gate 3.
