About Minnesota Whist

Minnesota Whist, popular in Minnesota and South Dakota, is a unique partnership game that does not use trumps. The game's objective varies based on the bidding: in a "high bid" round, teams aim to win seven or more of the thirteen tricks, while in a "low bid" round, the goal is to win six or fewer tricks.

Gameplay and Strategy

This simple yet engaging trick-taking game is ideal for developing strategic thinking and teamwork. Collaborate with your AI partner to outsmart your opponents in this fast-paced card game. As you grow your skills, increase the difficulty to challenge yourself further. The goal is to be the first partnership to reach the win target, either 13 or 7 tricks.

Quickfire Rules

After dealing cards evenly among four players, each player bids either high (black card) or low (red card). Bids are revealed starting left of the dealer. The first black card revealed initiates a 'high' round, where teams aim to win as many tricks as possible. If all cards are red, a 'low' round is played, where teams aim to win as few tricks as possible.

In a high bid round, the player to the right of the 'granded' player leads the first trick. In a low bid round, the player to the left of the dealer leads. Players must follow suit if possible; otherwise, they can play any card. The highest card in the led suit wins the trick, and the winner leads the next trick.

At the round's end, points are scored based on tricks won. In high bid rounds, the granding team earns a point for each trick over six. If they fail to win seven tricks, the opposing team earns points for tricks over six, depending on the 'set bonus' setting. In low bid rounds, teams earn a point for each trick under seven.
