Hnefatafl is an historic Scandinavian board game. Its variants were enjoyed across medieval Europe long before chess emerged. In these Tafl games, two uneven armies battle: the invading black force aims to capture the white king, while the defending white army protects their monarch and guides him to safety.

Frequently known as the Game of the Vikings, Hnefatafl recounts epic tales, from Muscovite incursions into Sweden to Viking raids on Britain. Yet regardless of the legend, one constant remains: the thrilling pursuit of the king.

Though the rules are straightforward, the gameplay reveals deep strategy and rewards tactical thinking. Surround enemy pieces, plan several moves ahead, set cunning traps, and compel your opponent to yield. Will you seize the king for riches and renown? Or can the steadfast guards repel the invaders and ensure their king’s escape?
