This week, Konami surprised classic RPG fans with a Suikoden-focused livestream. The franchise’s absence of a new entry for over a decade, aside from a Japan-only PSP title, fueled high anticipation. The announcements were met with a mixed reaction: a Suikoden anime (exciting!) and a new mobile game with gacha mechanics (less so).
Let's start with the anime, simply titled Suikoden: The Anime. Based on Suikoden II, it marks Konami's first animation production. Details remain scarce, including international availability, but a brief scenery clip was shown:
This is thrilling news for longtime fans and potentially a great introduction for newcomers, provided the anime receives a wider release.
The second announcement, Suikoden: Star Leap, is a new game with stunning visuals, reminiscent of Octopath Traveler, featuring 2D sprites on 3D backgrounds. Set between Suikoden I and Suikoden V, it retains the series’ signature 108 characters.
However, its mobile-only release and inclusion of gacha mechanics and monetization have caused some disappointment. This is a departure from the series’ history of premium console and PC releases. The impact of these monetization choices on gameplay and character collection remains to be seen. Meanwhile, *Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars* offers immediate gratification for fans. A new trailer debuted during the livestream, and the remaster launches tomorrow, March 6th.
