Marvel Rivals Season 1 Update Cracks Down on Mods
Marvel Rivals' Season 1 update has reportedly disabled custom-made mods, silencing a popular form of fan engagement. While the addition of the Fantastic Four as playable characters (Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman are currently available, with the Thing and Human Torch expected later) and a new Battle Pass, maps, and Doom Match mode have been welcomed, the unintended consequence of the update has left many players disappointed.
The ability to create and use custom character skins was a significant draw for many players since the game's launch in early December. However, NetEase Games, the developer, has consistently stated that mod usage violates the game's terms of service, even for purely cosmetic modifications. While previous actions involved individual mod bans, the Season 1 update appears to have implemented hash checking – a security measure verifying data authenticity – effectively eliminating widespread modding.
This move, while not entirely surprising given NetEase's established policy and previous crackdowns (including a ban on a mod featuring Donald Trump's likeness replacing Captain America's), has been met with mixed reactions. Some players express frustration over the loss of customizable content, with creators sharing unreleased mods that will now remain unseen. While some mods contained provocative content, including nude character skins, which prompted player complaints, the primary driver behind NetEase's decision likely stems from business considerations.
As a free-to-play game, Marvel Rivals relies heavily on in-game purchases of character bundles containing cosmetic items like skins and sprays. The widespread use of free, custom mods could significantly impact the game's profitability, making the ban a necessary, albeit unpopular, business strategy.
